Prenatal Massage

One of the most common questions massage therapists are often asked is if massage therapy is safe for pregnant women. In most cases massage therapy is a very safe and effective form of pain relief during pregnancy. It is  recommended that you get approval from your family physician or obstetrician to receive massage therapy if there have been any complications during pregnancy.

Typically, after the first trimester,  pregnant women cannot lay flat on their stomachs. In these instances, women are treated in a side-lying position.  Extra pillows are used to make sure the client feels comfortable and as relaxed as possible.

Pregnant women can benefit from massage therapy in some of the following ways:

  • Relief from muscular aches and pains
  • Reduced edema/swelling in the extremities
  • Increased relaxation which can in turn help pregnant women to achieve a better nights rest

If you are a pregnant woman looking for a massage therapist, ensure that he/she is registered massage therapist.  By doing so, you will have confidence in knowing that the therapist has received specific education in the treatment of pregnant women.
